John’s Café

Restaurant: John’s Cafe, Woodbury

When you are hankering for: A “bistro-style dining experience featuring fresh, innovative New American dishes that often resonate a Mediterranean flair.”

Today’s occasion: We were both hungry. It was our first outing since Lora got married. We were celebrating carbs being back on the table.

Ahhh, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars (not to be confused with Stags’ Leap Winery). For Cabernet lovers like me, you know this one’s a winner. If you’ve seen the movie Bottleshock, you know the Judgment of Paris. And if you don’t, Stag’s Leap’s 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon, the vineyard’s first commercial crop, shocked the wine world when it won first place among ten top French and California red wines in a blind taste test by leading French wine experts in the Paris tasting.

For Lora’s experience at Opus One, please see the text at the bottom of the article. We were honored to have chatted with David Pearson, appointed as CEO in 2004, the first person singly responsible for Opus One…….a must read:

Swirl, smell, swish, savor (or swallow). Oh yeah…it’s wine tasting time!

You may have noticed that wine seems to make its way into most of our stories; visits to boutiques, cheese shops, even house tours; somehow we find a way to incorporate our favorite beverage. We are wine appreciators.

I’d heard about the great local vineyards we have around us in Litchfield County, but never took the time to visit. Now I ask myself, what the heck was I waiting for, a written invitation?! Well, we got one, in the form of an email. Maria Miranda invited Unlocking Litchfield to come on up to Goshen to see what they’re all about, and of course, taste.

Naturally, when invited to go on a Chocolate Decadence Sunset Train Tour, we hop straight on to Amazon and find two hats (one conductor, one engineer), add to cart – check out. The next time we get together we hold try outs for who will be the conductor. We have to do our best “All Aboooarrrdddd!!” Little did Lora know, I’ve been saying it like that for a while. Anytime somebody mentions All Aboard Pizza in New Milford, I have to say “All Aboooooaaarrrddd.” I can’t help it. You can watch the video to see who ends up wearing the conductor hat 😉

Welcome! Here it is, our very first blog post, and of course, if you know us at all, you won’t be surprised to hear it’s about food!

Unlocking Litchfield had the pleasure of being invited along to The White Horse Country Pub & Restaurant in Marbledale, CT. If you have ever driven by, you’ll know the place is extremely popular. Reservations are highly recommended, but you could also get lucky if you just pop in. Folks come from hours away to enjoy the food and atmosphere The White Horse provides, and after our visit there, we completely understand why.
