Are you having a case of the post-decorated-for-the-holidays, house-feels-blah-now-blues? Everything feels just a bit dull in January. Well your house is feeling it too…it’s begging for a little pick-me-up. Some fresh curtains, a new piece of furniture, or a lovely new rug with a pop of color, will help your home, and you, feel just that little bit fresher.
We stopped in at The Primitive Home in New Milford to get a little bit of decorating inspiration from Holly, store owner, and somebody Lora knows really well – they’re sisters!
Holly fell into store ownership when the previous owner of The Primitive Home was selling the business. Holly and her husband Pete decided to buy it and give retail a go. That was 9 years ago and things are going well! We asked Holly a question or two while we browsed.
What are some of the things you sell here?
American-made furniture, rugs, lighting, textiles, window treatments, bedding, quilts. Pretty much everything to furnish your whole home. Plus we sell grab-and-go type products like Goatboy soaps and local honey.
Where do you find all these interesting goodies?
We go to Pennsylvania once a month and get our furniture right from the Amish. We know who’s making it; there’s no middleman, there’s no warehouse that the furniture’s just sitting in; it’s made when it’s ordered. We tell them what we want, and six weeks later we go pick it up. We do a lot of special orders for our customers; they can design their own furniture by choosing from many different options (tin doors, wood doors, handles, paint, wood). Anything you want, you can pretty much get!
We have different price points for everyone too. Pieces can be made in pine, oak, cherry, maple. Spend $300 on a coffee table or $1000, it’s up to you. We have all of the wood samples here.
The couches we sell are all made in the USA, as well as the upholstery. In fact, I’d say almost 90% of what we sell here is American made.
What’s your favorite thing about owning your own store?
I get to pick out whatever I want to sell….and I love decorating! If somebody comes in and wants to buy a couch and a rug to go with it, or curtains sometimes they’ll apologize and say, “We’re sorry we’re taking so much of your time.” I’m like, “Stop, I love it!”
Which local vendors do you carry?
Goatboy soaps, Hannan Honey from Southbury; in fact, Clinton Kelly has been in the store to pick some up. And we have custom signs, which I make at home in our woodshop. I cut, sand, everything. We have 900 different signs and sayings to choose from and the list grows every month. Customers get movie quotes, songs, anything they want! They’re great indoor or outdoors, we can put hooks on them to hang under your mailbox, or you can hang them inside. [We love our custom Unlocking Litchfield signs – see below!]
