Boy, did we have fun last night covering Don Gummer’s opening at the Morrison Gallery in Kent. It seemed that all the stars were aligned; Bev was happy with her outfit (inspired by Billy Morrison, gallery owner’s signature flared look) and Lora was having a really good hair day. We were ready!
When Billy asked Unlocking Litchfield to cover Don Gummer’s “Works on Paper” opening reception we were happy to oblige. Beautiful art work, scrumptious food and wine, and interesting people (a few of our favorite things, and not necessarily in that order).
It was a perfectly lovely warm evening as we entered the spacious gallery; doors wide open and inviting. We arrived just as Don Gummer and his beautiful daughter Louisa Jacobson Gummer were walking into the reception ahead of us; our timing was most fashionable.
Mr. Gummer is a well-known sculptor and just back from the ribbon cutting for his latest sculptural work on Broadway this week. He has 9 aluminum and stainless steel sculptures ranging in size from 8-10’ tall on display outside subway stations between Columbus Circle and 157th Street. More about Don Gummer on Broadway, here.
We were introduced to Don, a handsome man, whose facial expressions are hard to read, but we’re pretty sure he intended on running home after the show to check out our blog, and will surely be emailing us any day now to be interviewed and featured (we can hope!). We have questions. For example, the obvious, what is the inspiration behind the work? We studied Don’s artwork intently, and noticed a tiny little triangle in many of the pieces…hmm, what’s the story?
We enjoyed a glass of wine and the elegant spread consisting of figs, Prosciutto, (which Bev likened to ham gum, and subsequently cracked Lora up) and an assortment of melt-in-your-mouth cheeses and crackers catered by J.P. Gifford. We may have to add professional art opening attendees to our resumes.
It was an exciting moment for Billy when he pulled us over to get a shot of him and legendary artist Jasper Johns; which we can probably liken to the moment when we realized that Liam Neeson had just moseyed on in! We felt it was our duty to approach Liam to ask for a shot of him with Billy, which of course led to asking if he wouldn’t mind having a shot taken with us, Unlocking Litchfield. Of course he didn’t mind, in fact he was happy to chat with us about our blog (our business card is in his wallet), Kent, getting slightly lost finding his way there and…we’re not sure what else, we may have blacked out for a minute. The icing on the cake, when Liam after posing for a few shots with us, gave us a tickle to get “the” shot! Oh Liam you cheeky monkey!
Gummer’s mixed-media, watercolor and encaustic pieces can be viewed at the gallery through June 21st.
Enjoy the photos everyone!
